I’ve been practicing digital detoxing for a few years now, and it’s changed how I move through my days. My routine varies depending on how I’m feeling, sometimes I turn off my phone for an hour or two, and when I really need a reset, I’ll unplug for an entire day. Before
I do, I let my family know I’ll be in “digital detox mode” and to reach out to my husband if something important comes up.
I don’t do this to avoid anyone or anything, it’s simply how I recharge. Stepping away gives me the space to quiet my mind, refill my energy, and come back to myself without all the noise that usually fills the in-between moments.
I believe sometimes we have to step away from our phones, iPads, laptops, and all the constant connectivity to remember what our own thoughts sound like. To breathe without buzzing. To just be, fully present in our real lives instead of reacting to everyone else’s.
An uncomplicated digital routine doesn’t have to be extreme or rigid. It’s about creating small, steady habits that make your online life feel softer, calmer, and more aligned with your real one. Think of it as a way of protecting your energy before the world starts asking for your attention.
Start and End the Day With Intention
The way you begin and close your day sets the emotional tone for everything in between. When your mornings start with emails or social updates, your energy begins in reaction mode, you’re absorbing before you’re even awake.
Setting an intention at the beginning of your day is more powerful than you might realize. It tells your mind where to focus and helps you choose calm over chaos before the world has a chance to pull you in.
So, before you check your phone, give yourself five quiet minutes. Stretch, pray, write a short intention, or simply breathe in the stillness. Let your body and mind wake up on your terms, not your notifications.
And when the day winds down, disconnect in ways that invite rest. Silence notifications, plug your phone across the room, and trade screen time for something soothing like: reading, stretching, or reflection. Protect that last hour of your night; it’s where your mind learns how to rest again.
Sometimes protecting your peace starts with small changes. Read “How to Set Boundaries With Food, Sleep, and Your Phone—And Actually Keep Them” for gentle ways to protect your energy in everyday moments.
Reimagine How You Connect Online
A digital routine isn’t about restriction, it’s about redefining what connection really means.
Ask yourself: Do I feel lighter or heavier after this scroll?
You’re allowed to unfollow accounts that drain your energy, mute notifications that interrupt your peace, and take breaks from apps that pull you out of real life. Try building “screen-light” moments, time when your phone stays face-down so you can reconnect with what’s right in front of you.
Real connection doesn’t always happen through a screen; sometimes it starts when you put the screen down.
Simplify to Protect Your Energy
You don’t need a digital detox checklist or strict time limits. What truly makes a difference is simplifying.
Maybe that means waiting until after breakfast to check your messages. Maybe it’s taking one full day each week to go offline. Maybe it’s turning off notifications that make your mind race. These small, intentional shifts help you reclaim your focus and refill your calm.
Protecting your energy isn’t about control, it’s about care. When you choose quiet over chaos, you start to feel more like yourself again.

Closing Thoughts
Technology isn’t something to escape, it’s something to manage with mindfulness. I’m not telling you to give up your phone, delete every app, or disappear from your digital world.
But I am encouraging you to create a rhythm that feels good to your nervous system. One that lets you breathe, think, and rest without constant noise or comparison.
When you build an uncomplicated digital routine, you remind yourself that peace doesn’t come from disconnecting completely, it comes from being intentional about what deserves your attention.
How different might your days feel if you stopped letting your phone set the pace, and started setting it yourself?
